Welcome my lovelies to the Color My Face Behind The Scenes Series ::insert applause::. As a makeup artist I've learn the most invaluable lessons  to success when I'm in the moment, so I figure, hey why not share with my readers. This is coming to you in an effort to help new artist, models, photographers and stylist. We all know the benefits of having a team that can work seamlessly together....AMAZING WORK!!!!

First up we're tackling the models. Now don't shy away if you're not one, chances are even when your just going out on the town with friends some of these tips will be beneficial!

Face Time Factors:

Come prepared with fresh clean skin

1. Arrive Early or On Time/ Models can be notorious for  showing up to a job late, guess what ladies/gents its not fashionable or cute...its unprofessional! Whether its a big name or unknown, paid job or trade, someone other than yourself has invested time and money into taking your pictures...respect that. Besides, you never know who knows who, who can refer whom and who can give a bad reference.

No Joke, Bathe:

2. Clean Face/Hair/Nails.....Mouth/Body- Ok I know most of you are like ummmmm, yeah that should go without saying...trust me it doesn't! The cleanliness factor goes along way with your beauty & style team. Not only does it give an impression of your level of professionalism (new faces take note), it also makes the job faster for us and less daunting for you. Photographers, that means you guys get more shoot time....ya see a win win for all!

T.E.A.M.:

3. My cheerleading coach used bang into our heads "We are a T.E.A.M., Together Everyone Achieves More!" - cheesy right? But true!

            

   A make up artist needs a face, a stylist needs a body just as photographer needs a subject to shoot. You my dear models need us to form you into a fabulous work of art, but you must be willing to put in the work just like the rest. That means putting down the phone, keeping conversation to a minimum and controlling your urge to look at and touch everything around you. Its an experience and a half prepping for a shoot or show and we all want to enjoy it....guess what, the faster we finish the more you get to take in! Think about it.

Camera Ready:

4. Having a carefree, easy spirited attitude when approaching a new job is one of the BEST accessories you can carry. I know some of you fresh faces may be apprehensive and some of you pro's may think you know it all, but remember this - BREATHE! Before you walk in front of that camera inhale & exhale, let go of whatever you have racing through your mind and focus on the direction you need to for the job! If it's happening on the inside, it resonates outside. Your eyes, lips, skin color change from emotions and that takes part in what is captured by the camera.



                                                                                                                   
Be Thankful:

5. So the show is over, the shoot has wrapped and all you want to do is go grab a kale salad and venti unsweetened whatever - before you bolt, take 5 minutes to say a sincere...I repeat sincere thank you to your team. You've made an impression on them for the time of the job now the question is will it last in a favorable manor? That's all on you! Snatching a card and walking away is a huge no-no. Try quick handshake with 'thanks for your time' or 'it was lovely working with you'...you get the idea...these little things are what shape your character for referrals  and most importantly more work!!!

These were my top 5 pieces of advice for new models. There will be much more you'll see sprinkled through out the remainder of the series. Everything we as individual artist do affects the entire project, and we all have a common goal....making it the best a client has ever seen!

Flawless Foundation w/ Alcone at Home

Autumn is upon us and its time to start making transitions in all things. Sandals to boots, flowey tops to chunky sweaters and of course setting aside that tinted moisturizer that took you through the summer heat for its much more sophisticated sister - foundation!

I always begin my foundation with a clean  & moisturized face. Since I have very oily skin I skip the lotions and face cream before applying my makeup. Instead I use pure rose water. This tones and adds light moisture to my skin which is ideal. I follow with my primer of choice then it's makeup time. 

First I start with Alcone At Home concealer by DermaColor in #5. Using the AAH concealer brush I lightly stroke the concealer under my eye area and in between my brows in an upwards motion.

 

Next I blend my AAH concealer lightly with my index finger under my eyes, pulling slightly down to the outer edges of my nose. I also blend out the concealer between my eyebrows up towards my forehead and down the bridge of my nose. This highlights my face so my under eyes are brighter and my nose a bit sharper.

Using AAH foundation by RCMA in MB6 and the Alcone foundation brush I lightly apply to the remainder of my face and blend out with wither my fingers or a wet Alcone sponge (sheerer coverage).  This foundation is mineral oil free and perfect for my oily skin.

I follow up with light contouring under my cheek bones and on the sides of my nose. Blending out the harsh lines is key to making your contouring look natural.

 

Once all is done, I do a slight dusting with my AAH invisible Perfect Pressed Powder and I have a trusty 10hr+ no fail foundation application!

Yesterdays make w/ Alcone at Home foundation, and no I do not have an explanation for that never-ending smirk of mine....::sigh::

Get the look: Nicole Miller @ MBFW ft. Alcone at Home

Hey there Poptarts

                          Day 2 (I'm late I know, don't hate me) and designer Nicole Miller was on the catwalk. Florals, patterns and artistic designs rules her show. 

Seriously the CUTEST part of the show...model jumble

The runway is always hot but backstage is where you really get a feel of what's happening. And what caught my eye was of course the faces. 

Bold monochromatic (yes, it's all about one color...take note) eyes in browns and taupes had me overjoyed. Not to mention the raspberry bold lips....LOVE!!!! Eyebrows were pronounced, definitely couldn't miss them. 

 

 

Lets start with the face, a demi-matte look can be achieved with the Alcone at Home foundation that best suits you, along with the AAH foundation brush. Use downward strokes to achieve this finish with good coverage. 

Bold yet wearable eyebrows are simple. Opt for a color about 2 shades lighter than your hair color. For myself I'd choose AAH eyeshadow # 8 . With the Alcone slanted liner brush start at the arch and apply short strokes of color building as you go. Once you've tackle the end move your strokes gradually from the middle of the brow to the beginning in the direction of the tail....got it?!? Trust me its simple. 

Now those gorgeous lips!!! To achieve that perfect deep berry opt for the Alcone  Girls Night Out palette. Apply #6  all over lips as your base. Mix #'s 4  & 5  to achieve your perfect deep berry. Last line the outer portion of your lips in #5 only and blend towards the center.

 

 



Now toss that hair up into a half crowned messy braid and let the street be your runway ~_^

Get The Look: Desigual @ MBFW ft. Alcone At Home

                            The title says it all but of course I ramble ;) Today the colourful creations of Desigual graced the runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and I had the pleasure of viewing the fashion explosion live! 

First lets talk runway. Models were of course at that level of goddess beautiful and they werked the catwalk. Desigual is known for their colorful, fun loving clothes and today's show was no disappointment in those departments. Colors, patterns, prints...simply everything spring! 

Backstage and on the catwalk Desigual screams "WE KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN"

Now on to what you really want to know, MAKEUP!!!! Simple, dewey and fresh faced. Monochromatic soft eyes in peaches and rose. The cheeks followed suit but gave each model that flushed/freshly pinched appeal. For the lips, the models sported a bit more color but stayed true to the tones. They had a slight matte effect but not overly done. In other words you can rip this look straight from the catwalk to the street. It's that wearer friendly.

Acheive this flawless look with some of my favs from Alcone At Home. 

Face- mix Embryolisee Lait Creme Concentre with the AAH foundation shade that best suits you

Eye- reach for blush #3 (yes blush) and sweep across your lids. It'll give the perfect rosey/peach combo but not over power the eye. And it flatters EVERY skintone. 

Cheeks- dab your angled AAH blush brush into both blushers #1 & #4 and sweep the apples of your cheeks.

Lips- mix lip shades #7 & #8 or #6 & #7 (both look great) and apply to lips. Dab a few touches of lipgloss colors Peace or Grace to the bottom lip and blend out.

You're now officially catwalk ready!

Transitioning Summer Makeup to Fall

Happenings Around and About CMF

Hello my dearest darlings! I know its been awhile but yours truely has been mega busy...as of now I'm seriously considering seeking out an assistant. But in the meantime I had to reconnect, and let you know what I've been up to and give a warm thanks to my lovely readers for their continued support. Listed below are a few things I have been working on just for you guys:

Color My Face is now actively working on bringing you a site you'd be happy to look at, share and interact with. Remember its not just makeup here, we're creating a Beauty Community that will allow us to inform and learn together. CMF will intergrate its beautiful pictures, beauty tips, industry expert interviews and "how to" videos all in one place...just for your viewing pleasure ;)

I've given a few previews of some of my portfolio work on Facebook and Instagram but there's definitely more to come. Make sure you stay tuned, trust me you won't want to miss it!

Cole Haan Campaign Ad submission - *Models out the wazoo* (insert need for assistant), Stylist, company contacts....seriously it's enough to drive anyone competly mad!

Why You Mad Son film - The brilliant minds behind Why You Mad Son Radio will be bringing to life their next short film. Casting calls were held here in NYC last week and I can't wait to see who I'll be working with. I can't say much about the concept just yet but keep in mind ZOMBIES!! The revolution of the mind is undead  :)

Enigma Filmworks - CEO Kecia J. Benson allowed CMF the honor of being her MakeUpArtist for the screening of her documentary 'Beale Street Blues'. She covers the tale of legendary blues musician Memphis Gold and the tribulations of blues musicians in todays world. Look out for my up coming interview with her and more about projects she has in the works.

Lalitha Dance Troupe - CMF has been named their official MUA....enough said!

Editorials....Collabs....Youtube appearance..Workshops...Television......Movies..........YEAH I've got even more on the horizon.

Whats next?

A look into social media. Bloom.com gave CMF the opportunity of attending a Social Media Week event in conjunction with Elle.com for 'So You Think You Can Start Up' as a Bloom Ambassodor. For a new business this was HUGE! Not only did I get to meet the CEO & Founder of Bloom (who is an absolute doll), but also some other fabulous startup folks in the beauty and fashion industry. I'll give you all a deeper look into this event and my Top 10 social media beauty outlets in the next post.

I've got the BLUES

I'VE GOT THE BLUES...but in a good way!

This is how I did it 
*yes, after reading this over I realize I need to do videos or pic tutorials :-)*

Face:

Prime - Boots No. 7 Mattifying Makeup Base all over face 

Under eye - MallyBeauty Liquid Light Eye Brightner in Rich (seriously treats undereyes right and makes them super soft, you only need a little)

NYX Concealer Stick in Nutmeg (just a tiny bit, the brightner practically banishes the dark circles)

Foundation - BH Cosmetics Liquid Foundation (Ok, so its new and inexpensive so I was skeptical but DANG this stuff is great! Won't irritate sensitive skin, a little goes a long way and it doesn't oxidize to a yucky rust color) 

Contour - BH Cosmetics Contour and Blush Palette deep brown (hollows of cheeks and hairline)

Set - MallyBeauty Poreless Perfection Skin Finisher (do not be afraid of the single color, its a micro fine milled powder and just a touch will set your foundation to perfection)

Blush - NYX Powder Blush in Cocoa (I literally have to force myself to use other blush colors because I love this one sooooooo FREAKIN much!!!! It's universally flattering so no matter your skin tone you can rock it.)

LIPS:

Line - NK Lip Liner in Deep Brown (cover entire lip with liner, it helps hold the lipstick on longer)

Lipstick - NYX Extra Creamy Lipstick in Heather

Gloss - NYX Mega Shine Lipgloss in Miami Babe (not really needed by eh...why not!)

EYE:

Prime - Too Faced Shadow Insurance

(See Pic)

Crease - #1 Blend in well fluffy blending brush

Lid- #2 angled shadow brush, go over #2 w/ #3 same brush

Crease - Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral palette #9 (dark brown), crease brush (build your definition here,                        give the eye depth and blend upwards)

              Jenni Rivera palette from BH Cosmetics shimmering Navy, crease brush (this is where you give your smokey effect, concentrate in outer corner for a bit, blend inwards and upwards)

Brow Bone - #4, small shadow brush (blend well and down)

Inner corner - #5 small shadow brush

Liner - MallyBeauty Starlight Eyeliner in Midnight (upper water line, inner corner from end of lashes to tear duct. This will complete the line your lashes make and eliminate the need for liner across the lid which can take away from lid space.)

Bottom Liner - MallyBeauty Starlight Eyeliner in Sailor

Lashes - Lancome Hypnose Star lash primer on lash tips ONLY

              Lancome Hypnose Star mascara (build volume at base first, go over primed tips to color, then entire lash)

Bottom Lashes - Same mascara very light application 

Final Step to give you that awesome AIRBRUSHED look.....

MallyBeauty Evercolor Poreless Face Defender - it WILL keep your makeup in place, face matte and looking flawless for a good 10+ hours (well thats how long I have my makeup on minimum each day, after the 10 hours pass I could care less LOL)

As all of us here in the Color My Face beauty community know, YouTube has taken the internet by storm with its open platform to allow beauty "gurus" to share their tips, tricks, advice and so forth with the rest of the world. One such expert is the AMAZING Farah Dhukai. This Toronto based cosmetologist has been nothing less than a success by making her mark in the YouTube universe with her quirky sense of humor, highly insightful tutorials and her desire to keep women looking and feeling their best. Farah's journey on YouTube started 2 1/2 years ago with one simple statement "LET'S BE FRIENDS"! I know I accepted the offer, and trust me after this interview you will to....let's see what the ever so wonderful Farah Dhukai has to say. 

CMF: Hi Farah, thank you for taking the time to do this blog interview with Color My Face. For the readers that are not familiar with your background in cosmetology or YouTube, can you please tell us how you began in the beauty industry and where it has led you to date?

FD: Hi darling! Its my pleasure! It made me so happy to know that people would be interested in getting to know more about me! I was interested in beauty from a young age. My sister is a few years older than I am so I would always go play in her make up when I was younger and wear her lipstick ALL wrong.. and by all wrong I mean Id have clown lips haha all throughout my childhood I was known for wearing my make up all wrong but hey.. I was learning and I thought I looked cute! As I was finishing high school I was in the dilemma of "what do I LOVE to do and what do I want to make a career out of" and the only thing that came to mind was make up. I live and breathe make up! So out of high school, I went to the School of Make Up Art in downtown Toronto and graduated with honours in Make up Artistry and then a year down the road, I moved to New York to go school at Aveda for Cosmetology. I found that freelancing just wasn't for me and at the end of the day, all I would do is teach people how I did a certain look.. so one day I was just browsing the internet and found some videos on YouTube and thought HEY I NEEEEED to do this!!! So I grabbed my camera and have been in LOVE with it since then and now here I am! 

Clearly you have covered a lot of ground with your work. What is the most rewarding part of being in the beauty industry? 

 Hands down.. all the positive comments I get from women around the world telling me how I've changed their lives for the better and how I've made them feel better about themselves! Words cannot express how warm my heart feels when I get emails from women saying I've helped boost their self esteem and how I've helped them feel confident in themselves! That has got to be the most rewarding part of it all! A lot of us tend to forget that were all beautiful in our own way!

As a fan, I've noticed you take a more natural approach to beauty treatments you recommend and often give tutorials of how we as viewers can achieve these treatments at home ourselves. What makes this approach more attractive to you as opposed to purchasing the new "it" product to use and/or review?

I have been a sucker to trying the new "it" product and I still am.. but at the end of the day I found all it did was empty my wallet and it did nothing for my hair or skin. After wasting my money on new products, I always found myself going back to the natural treatments that my mom and grandmother taught me and the best part about them is that they're much cheaper! I mean its great that using a natural alternative is much cheaper, but as I've been getting older, its been scaring me all the chemicals that we put in and on our bodies on a daily basis.. ya the product might work great but we don't know what its doing to our bodies in the long run.. so that's why I like a more natural approach to skin and hair care. 

 I'd like to delve into your personal routine for a moment. What do you do daily and/or weekly to your face to keep it fresh and glowing? And now that we're going through a change in seasons, will your face routine change as well?

 My personal routine changes all the time because I get so bored and excited with new things all the time. I get requests all the time for a skincare routine but because I'm constantly reading up on natural ways to treat a certain skin issue, I try a new thing out probably every week! I haven't found anything that I'm in love with as of yet, except for the turmeric mask that I showed in a video. That is my HOLY GRAIL when all else fails for me.. that's my mask right thereeeee!!! No matter what season, I always fall back on that mask!

 Sometimes with school or work...life in general, we tend to neglect or bodies and the results are never pretty. Do you ever find yourself so busy that you have to stop and refocus? If so, what steps do you take to balance again?

 I do find that sometimes I get so caught up in life that I need to step back and take a look at what's missing and what harm its doing to me! I thank god for my supportive husband and sister who are always there to catch me when I'm slipping! My sister is always there to cheer me up and give me encouragement when I'm feeling worn out and I LOVE her for that! She's my best friend! And at the end of every night, my husband and I always talk before going to bed about our day and what we've been doing so that really helps me vent, clear my thoughts and get my focus back.

  Growing up, most little girls have an ideal image of what beautiful is. Whether through dolls, fairy-tales or movies we were often presented rigid views of what a beautiful woman should look like. Who (character wise) did you look to as beautiful growing up? 

This is so funny because growing up.. I wasn't your normal little girl! I always hung out with my brother and my dad so I was more of a tom boy and wasn't really into the whole dolls and fairy tale princesses.. but I could tell you the name of every exotic car I saw at the auto show! I can honestly say though, growing up the person I thought that was most beautiful was my grandmother and I always looked up to her and wished I can grow up to be just like her. 


Now, setting aside the notion of beauty only being on the outside, what do you truly feel makes a woman beautiful?

Setting the notion of beauty aside however, I think the one thing that can make a woman beautiful is her ability to love and show kindness and humility. I feel like as the days go by, the "world" forgets that at the end of the day, were all human beings, we all have one beating heart, and regardless of looks, race, age etc etc.. it beats the same. I find that its really easy for people to attack and judge each other (I see this all the time from being on YouTube) so when I see a woman show kindness and love and just paying it forward, I think that's the most beautiful thing.

 Previously I asked about a character that you looked up to. But, in my experience I've realized the generations of women before me have shaped my appreciation of true beauty. Through your life who have you admired and give thanks to for being an inspiring force in your choice of career?

 Haha I didn't even know this question was coming but I answered it in my previous answer… I'll elaborate more on it! Throughout my life I've admired my grandmother (my moms mom). She's one person who has had "the short end of the stick" all throughout her life. I mean the struggles that she has been through, I can't even imagine myself getting past them… and she got through them with a smile and never lost faith or hope. She is the reason for me being me. Throughout my life she has always been there for me, teaching me about life and about love. She always taught me that life isn't about the material things, but about having faith in god and loving one another. Regardless of what I did, she always encouraged me to be myself and to not care about other people's opinions of me, because at the end of the day, life is just about being happy. I felt so lost when she passed away and not a single day goes by that I don't think about her.. I miss her like crazy! 

 The women in my life were always giving me advice on health and beauty. From practices to products, what has been some of the "old school" advice you've been given that you still practice today?

 I could honestly write a book on all the "old school" advice I've been given, and still get to this day! LOL its funny because one of the biggest pieces of advice that I've been given is to drink milk because it just makes everything better. Your skin your hair your body.. milk. Milk is the answer to all! 

  Now for fun lets talk makeup for a moment. Do you have a favorite approach to your "everyday" look or have you found you're one to push the envelope and always try something new and edgy? Also, what would you say would be your top 5 makeup products at the moment?

 I don't really have an everyday make up look.. I get really bored with looking the "same" all the time, so I'm always trying to new things (even if I look ridiculous and get criticized for it). Its funny because I can be such an introvert at times, but then I really like to stand out and look different from the crowd  at the same time! I'm really weird like that! Hmmm top 5 make up products.. Its hard to choose.. BUT.. Foundation: Chanel Perfection Lumiere, Highlight: Josie Maran Argan Illuminzer, Mascara: Loreal Voluminous, Lip Balm: Jack Black Lip Balm.. I cannot live with chapped/dry lips I need them to be moisturized 24/7 and last would be my MAC Iridescent Powder in Golden Bronze.. I need to be bronzed and glistening all year round!!!

 The best advice I can give someone is to never change who you are for anyone or anything! You were made unique so be confident in all that you've been blessed with and face the world with a smile. Become An Illusionist 

 Having a the look of bigger eyes can make a face very appealing. A few small steps can take a simple look and amp it of knock-out! Once you've competed your shadow, follow these simple steps to boost your overall eye look [Don't wear shadow everyday? Try it anyway, still works wonders]: 

 1. Eyeliner can be a friend or foe. For an every day doe eyed look, skip lining the entire lid.  Use liner on the top from the outer corner to the middle (less is definitely more in this case, stop at the middle) of you upper lash line. Slim the line as you go, so your end result will be thicker on the outer corner and fade down. Follow by lining the bottom waterline from the outer corner into 1/4 to 1/2 of the lash line (use your discretion, it all depends on what you like so play with it). Once you've line the bottom waterline, squeeze your eye shut for a few seconds, this will transfer liner to the upper water line and give the base of your lashes a darker appearance.

 2. Follow with mascara. Start with the lower lashes, many of us look past this step but a little mascara on the bottom lash really helps when you want a full open eye. Move to the upper lashes, starting with curling the lashes (if needed) to open your eye even more. Begin applying mascara at the base and wiggle, wiggle, wiggle up. Remember to catch the inner lashes, and sweep the outer lashes outwards. This will fan out your lashes. Do a quick sweep over the top of the lashes as well, distributing color to the lash tips and covering and possible fall out from shadow. 

 3. Finally, use a highlighter, sparkle or just brighter shadow in the inner corner of you eye. Pull it across the bottom lash line slightly, I'd say about 1/4 towards the center. 

 4. Try to pull your gorgeous self away from the mirror...it'll be hard, but you can do it ~_^
